Basketball

NBA Rules, Concepts, Definitions

  • NBA stands for “National Basketball Association”
  • The game consists of two teams playing against each other, with 5 players on the court from each team at a time. The team to score the most points on their respective basket before the end of the game wins.
  • The team with the ball is called the “Offensive Team.” The team without the ball is called the “Defensive Team.” The Defense tries to prevent the other team from scoring through blocking, stealing, and securing rebounds.
  • Scoring is done through the following:
    • Taking a shot inside the three point line (2 pts)
    • Taking a shot behind the three point line (3 pts)
    • Taking a free throw (1 pt)
  • A full length NBA game has 4 quarters totaling 48 minutes. Each quarter is 12 minutes in length.
  • After each quarter, there is a short break period. After the first two quarters, there is a longer break period that is called “Halftime.” After the halftime period, each team switches scoring to the other basket.
  • Two necessary ways to move the ball around the court are “Dribbling” and “Passing.”
  • Dribbling the ball consists of the player bouncing the ball up and down with one hand touching the ball. If a player dribbles the ball, stops, then dribbles again, that is a violation and is known as a “Double Dribble.” If this happens, the other team is awarded the ball.
  • Passing is movement of the basketball from one player to another on the same team. Various passes include: “Bounce pass, chest pass, and overhead pass. “
  • Screening/pick – when an offensive player tries to block a defensive player from defending another offensive player
  • “Player Positions” for offense
    • Point guard – usually in charge of dribbling the ball, calling plays, one of the quicker players on the floor. Normally the shortest player on the floor
    • Shooting Guard – can also dribble the ball, has the ability to score the ball; a bit taller than the Point Guard
    • Small forward - Taller than the guards, smaller than the Center, can set screens and shoot the ball, has the ability to dribble and score
    • Power Forward – Second tallest on the floor, set screens, post up to score in the paint
    • Center – Tallest player on the floor, set screens, post up under the basket to score
  • On defense, ALL players have the job to stop the other team from scoring the basketball
  • Violations
    • Traveling – taking two or more steps without dribbling the ball
    • Double dribble - If a player dribbles the ball, stops, then dribbles again
    • Carrying/Palming – When a player has their hand too far to the side or under the ball when dribbling
    • Foul – Illegal physical contact on another player
      • Hitting
      • Pushing
      • Holding
      • Slapping
      • Illegal screen/pick
